Thesis 95: The problem of sin is a broken relationship between God and man. The goal of salvation is to restore the relationship between God and man.

Jesus wants to get married! Revelation 19:6-9 tells us about it.

“I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth. Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints. And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the lamb.”

The relationship between mankind and God was broken in Eden. When Adam and Eve sinned, they hid themselves and no longer came eagerly to meet God; no longer could they walk with Him in the cool of the evening.

Adam and Eve had chosen not to trust the One who had been only trustworthy, and thus the relationship with God was broken.

But God was not willing that the story should end there. Communion with His created children was so important to Him that He was willing to go to the cross in order to restore that broken relationship. He came personally to walk among men, this time veiled with humanity, in order to bridge the gap that sin had made.

“Since Jesus came to dwell with us, we know that God is acquainted with our trials, and sympathizes with our griefs. Every son and daughter of Adam may understand that our Creator is the friend of sinners. For in every doctrine of grace, every promise of joy, every deed of love, every divine attraction presented in the Saviour’s life on earth, we see ‘God with us.’” – The Desire of Ages, p. 24.

And now Jesus wants to get married. What does it mean to get married? It means to get together personally and permanently.

In the Tokyo airport my wife and I once met a Swedish man on his way to meet his bride in Seoul, Korea. They had never met. They had done a lot of long-distance communication through correspondence. But this was the first time they would see each other in person. He was understandably eager to meet her. He was looking forward to the marriage, looking forward to getting together with her in person and for keeps.

Through prayer and the study of His Word, we have been in correspondence with Jesus. We have learned to love Him, because He first loved us. But we can join Him in looking forward to the marriage, to the time when we can meet with Him, personally and forever.

Sometimes people worry about a day-by-day relationship with Christ becoming just another works trip. But the relationship is not simply a means to an end. It is the end itself! We do not have a relationship with Christ in order to be saved. We are saved in order to be able to have a relationship with Christ!

“As through Jesus we enter into rest, heaven begins here. We respond to His invitation, Come, learn of Me, and in thus coming we begin the life eternal. Heaven is a ceaseless approaching to God through Christ. The longer we are in the heaven of bliss, the more and still more of glory will be opened to us; and the more we know of God, the more intense will be our happiness. As we walk with Jesus in this life, we may be filled with His love, satisfied with His presence. All that human nature can bear, we may receive here. But what is this compared with the hereafter?” – The Desire of Ages, pp. 331, 332.

Jesus wants to get married! Do you?
