Thesis 4: Christianity and Salvation are not based on what you do but on whom you know.
A woman bought a new pair of contact lenses. Not long after, she was stopped for a traffic violation, and the police officer, after looking at the restriction on her driver’s license asked sternly,
“Where are your glasses?” She replied, “I have contacts.” He said, “I don’t care whom you know—you’re supposed to be wearing your glasses!”
It’s an indisputable fact in this world that whom you know makes a difference. If you’re looking for employment and you’re acquainted with the boss, you have an advantage. If you’re brought into court and you know the judge, it’s good news. If you’re wishing for an introduction to someone, and you discover that you know his friend, you’ve got it made.
When Abraham Lincoln was president, he would sometimes leave instructions with his staff that he was not to be disturbed. He would go into his office and close the door behind him. The guards would stand outside, and up and down the hallway, to prevent anyone from going in.
But then someone would come hurrying down the hall. He would walk right past the guards, throw open the door, and go straight to the president. The guards wouldn’t even try to stop him. Why? Because his name was Tad Lincoln, and he was the president’s son! His relationship to the president made all the difference.
Do you believe that your relationship with Christ is the thing that makes all the difference in your spiritual life? Do you believe that Christianity is based on whom you know? Or do you believe that it is based on what you do?
At a camp meeting in the Northwest several years ago, the editor of the Adventist Review stood up and asked the audience some questions. He said, “How many of you believe that you are saved by faith in Jesus Christ alone?” A few hands went up and then quickly back down.
Then he asked, “How many of you believe that you are saved on the basis of your works?” A few other hands went up and then quickly back down.
And he asked, “How many of you believe that you are saved by faith in Jesus Christ, plus your good works?” And all the rest of the hands went up and stayed up and waved in the air!
He said, “I hope by the time this morning’s sermon is over, you will have changed your minds!”
And he went on to prove that we are saved by faith in Christ alone. Period.
Jesus said it in John 17:3.
This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. - John 17:3
As through Jesus we enter into rest, heaven begins here. We respond to His invitation, Come, learn of Me, and in thus coming we begin the life eternal. Heaven is a ceaseless approaching to God through Christ. - The Desire of Ages, page 331
Do you know Him? Knowing Jesus is the entire basis of the Christian life. Knowing Jesus is the way to life eternal. Knowing Jesus will change your lifestyle, for as you learn to know Him and love Him and associate with Him, you will be changed into His image.
Righteousness is a Person. Salvation is a Person. Through Jesus your eternal life can start today!
